FAQ

What records does HMRC expect for a mileage claim?

HMRC expects the dates and mileage of your business journeys, and a claim must include the reason for every journey and the start and end postcodes. Any employer reimbursement must be deducted. VoltLogger records the date, the distance and both addresses automatically from the car itself; you set the reason in one tap.

How much can I claim per mile with my own Tesla?

If you drive your personal EV for business, you claim the AMAP rate: 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles from 6 April 2026, then 25p per mile above that. Electric cars get the same rate as petrol ones. At 5,000 business miles that is a £2,750 claim, provided your log holds up.

Worked examples →

Can I get reimbursed for charging my EV at home?

Company-EV drivers use HMRC’s advisory electric rate: currently 7p per mile for home charging and 15p per mile for public charging, and the rates are reviewed quarterly. If the Tesla is your own, you claim AMAP (55p/25p) instead, because the advisory rate applies only to company cars. Either way, it pays to know your real cost per kWh.

The rules explained →

Do I need an OBD dongle to track Tesla mileage?

No. Your Tesla already measures its odometer, location and charging. VoltLogger reads them through the official Tesla Fleet API: connect your account once and every trip is logged from the car’s own odometer, which is what makes the log defensible.

Why odometer beats GPS →

Will it drain my battery or keep the car awake?

No. VoltLogger polls adaptively: frequently while driving or charging, and it backs off when parked so the car sleeps normally. If a poll is missed, no distance is lost: the odometer difference reconstructs the trip and your totals always reconcile with the real odometer.

How logging works →

What language is the app in?

The app interface is currently Dutch; VoltLogger launched in the Netherlands first. An English version is in the works, and the logging itself (trips, odometer readings, charging sessions, CSV/PDF exports) already works with any Tesla in the UK or EU.
